Safest DIY mold removal for family with coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's the mold I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’re in an older building in Deira and with all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Mold exposure is a common trigger for respiratory irritation and persistent coughing, especially in children. For a small patch (under 1 square meter) found behind furniture, a careful DIY approach is possible.
First, contain the area. Isolate the room and seal the door with plastic if possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during the entire process to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. For cleaning, avoid bleach. It's a harsh chemical that primarily bleaches the mold while leaving the root structure intact, and its fumes can worsen respiratory issues. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a baking soda paste. Spray vinegar directly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub the area with a stiff brush and warm soapy water. Dry the surface completely immediately after. The critical step in Dubai's climate is addressing the moisture source. Mold behind a wardrobe is classic condensation caused by poor air circulation. In our high humidity, furniture pushed against an exterior wall creates a cold spot where moisture condenses. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air to circulate. Use a dehumidifier in the room, aiming to keep relative humidity below 55%. Consistently run your AC, as it acts as a dehumidifier. However, with children already coughing, the mold you see may not be the only issue. Spores can travel through the AC system or be hidden within wall cavities. If the coughing persists after your cleanup, or if the mold returns quickly, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is strongly recommended. This identifies the species and the full extent of the problem, which is crucial for your family's health in an older Deira building. |
