Safest DIY way to remove kids' bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and I just spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I think the humidity from the recent weather made it worse. What’s the fastest and safest way to get rid of it myself without risking my family's health?

Black mold growth in Dubai villas is common due to high humidity and AC condensation. For a small patch (under 1 square foot) found in the closet, you can safely handle it yourself if no family members have compromised immune systems.

First, keep the kids out of the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen the spores and prevent them from becoming airborne. Avoid over-saturating the wall, as excess moisture fuels new growth. Let the vinegar solution sit for an hour, then scrub the area with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and thoroughly dry the area. A fan or dehumidifier is essential to get it completely dry within a few hours.

Dispose of any porous materials the mold was growing on, like cardboard boxes or damaged drywall. Simply bag and discard them. The key is addressing the moisture source. In this case, the closet likely has poor air circulation. Leave the closet doors open and consider using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel to prevent recurrence.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or if the coughing persists after your cleanup, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Hidden mold inside wall cavities or AC ducts is a frequent issue here and requires specialized equipment to diagnose and remediate safely.
