My kids have been coughing more than usual, especially my youngest, and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled their toys out from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black mold on the wall behind the dresser, probably from the humidity. What’s the safest and quickest way to deal with this to make sure it doesn’t affect their health?

For a small patch, first move the children and their toys to another well-ventilated room to limit exposure. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. The quickest DIY method is to scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), but vinegar is often preferred for its lower fumes. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. This addresses surface growth only.

However, the discovery of mold behind furniture in a Jumeirah villa is a strong indicator of a deeper humidity issue. The wall itself may be retaining moisture from our coastal climate or from AC condensation, and the mold you see is likely just the visible portion. Simply wiping the surface will not address the root cause, and regrowth is highly probable.
