Safest way to clean bathroom mold without worsening cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold that’s growing behind the toilet in our master bathroom. We've lived here in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed it spreading on the wall after the recent humidity. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without making their allergies worse?

Bathroom mold is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers, and it can definitely irritate airways and worsen a cough. For a small patch behind the toilet, you can clean it safely yourself with the right precautions to avoid spreading spores.

First, ensure the room is well-ventilated; open a window and run the bathroom exhaust fan. Equip yourself with an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves to prevent inhalation and contact. For cleaning, avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. Instead, use a dedicated, non-bleach mold cleaner, undiluted white vinegar, or a solution of baking soda and water. Apply the solution to the moldy area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and seal them in a plastic bag before disposal.

The key is to address the moisture source. In villas, this is often condensation from cold water pipes in the wall or a small leak from the toilet seal. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier or your AC continuously to keep the room dry and monitor the area for any regrowth.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify hidden moisture sources within the wall cavity and perform air quality tests to determine if the mold type is contributing to the respiratory symptoms. In many cases, a leaking pipe or faulty seal needs to be repaired to prevent recurrence.
