Safest way to clean black mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I finally pulled their toy chest away from the wall in their bedroom and found a patch of black mold behind it. We live in an older building in Deira and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. What's the safest way to clean this up myself without risking my family's health?

Black mold behind furniture is common in older Deira buildings due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The safest approach requires containment and proper protection.

First, do not disturb the area. Isolate the room by closing the door and opening a window if possible. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. For a small patch (under one square meter), mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the mold to suppress spores, then scrub with a disposable cloth. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and can irritate airways.

After cleaning, wipe the area with a damp cloth, place all used materials in a sealed bag, and dispose of it immediately. Run a dehumidifier or your AC continuously to keep humidity below 60%, and move furniture at least six inches from walls to improve airflow.

However, if the coughing persists or the mold covers a larger area, surface cleaning isn't enough. Visible mold often indicates a deeper moisture issue within the wall. For health concerns, especially with children, a professional inspection is advised to assess hidden spread and identify the species. Lab analysis is the only way to confirm the mold type and potential toxicity, which guides proper remediation.
