Safest way to clean black mold for kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It's been so humid lately that it's spread behind the toilet and even onto the ceiling. What's the safest way to clean this myself without making their allergies worse, or should I just call a professional?

The safest approach depends on the extent. For a small, isolated patch (under 1 square foot), you can clean it yourself carefully. For the widespread growth you're describing, especially on porous surfaces like drywall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess hidden moisture and spore levels.

For a DIY attempt, ensure the room is well-ventilated and your children are in another part of the home. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part distilled white vinegar. Spray it onto the mould, let it sit for an hour to kill the growth, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and can release more irritants into the air.

However, given the spread behind the toilet and on the ceiling, the moisture source is significant. In Dubai's high humidity, this often indicates persistent condensation from your AC system or a hidden leak. Simply cleaning the visible mould won't solve the underlying problem, and the disturbance from scrubbing could temporarily increase airborne spores.

A professional can use moisture meters to find the source and recommend remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent cross-contamination. For health-related cases, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the environment is safe.
