Safest way to clean black mold from AC drip?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past couple of weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the sofa in our living room, which is against an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa, and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner where the AC vent drips a little. It’s been so humid lately that I’m worried it’s the cause of their allergies. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

For a patch smaller than one square foot, you can clean it yourself safely. First, ensure the area is well-ventilated by opening windows. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and protective eyewear to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle—do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes. Lightly mist the mouldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and place all cleaning materials in a sealed bag for disposal. The critical step is to fix the moisture source. The AC drip indicates a clogged condensate drain line or an issue with the unit's drip pan, which is extremely common in Dubai's humidity. Until that is resolved by an HVAC technician, the mould will return. Given that this is on an exterior wall and associated with a persistent moisture issue, and especially because your children are already showing respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The mould you see is often just the surface growth; it can penetrate deeper into building materials. An inspection can assess the full extent and identify the specific type of mould, which is important for understanding potential health impacts. |
