Safest way to clean black mold from bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I think it might be from the humidity, especially after we run the AC. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

Black mold in Dubai bedrooms is common due to high humidity and AC condensation creating damp spots. For a small patch (under one square foot) behind a wardrobe, you can clean it yourself safely. For anything larger, or if anyone has persistent respiratory issues like coughing, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and risk.

Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Isolate the area by closing the bedroom door and opening a window if possible. Mix a solution of one part bleach to four parts water. Scrub the moldy area with this solution using a stiff brush, then wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Do not mix bleach with other cleaners. Discard any porous materials like damaged drywall or fabric that are moldy.

The key is not just cleaning but fixing the source. In Jumeirah villas, this is often condensation from AC ducts or a wall leak. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or run the AC continuously to keep humidity below 60%. Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to improve air circulation.

Since your children are already symptomatic, DIY cleaning may not be sufficient. Spores can be airborne and affect the AC system. A proper inspection, often including air and surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab for analysis, identifies the species and confirms the area is safe. This is the most reliable way to protect your family's health in this situation.
