Safest way to clean black mold near kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and we just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their wardrobe in the master bedroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity is making it worse. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

The safest approach depends on the size. For a patch smaller than a square foot, you can clean it yourself with precautions. For anything larger, or if the wall feels soft or damp, you must stop and call a professional inspector, as the mold has likely penetrated the building material.

First, isolate the area. Keep the kids and any family members with asthma or allergies out of the room. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. The acidity of vinegar is more effective at killing the mold. Spray the area thoroughly and let it sit for an hour to penetrate.

Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe it clean with damp cloths you intend to discard. Place all cleaning materials, including the brush and cloths, into a sealed plastic bag before disposing of them.

Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source. In a Jumeirah villa, this is almost always due to condensation from AC cold bridges or a small, hidden water leak. The recent high humidity will exacerbate any existing moisture problem. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or ensure your AC is running consistently to keep the room's relative humidity below 60% to prevent rapid regrowth.

If the coughs persist after cleaning or you are unsure of the extent, a professional inspection with lab testing is the only way to identify the mold species and confirm the air quality is safe. DIY cleaning addresses the visible problem, but not necessarily the airborne spores or root cause.
