Safest way to clean black mold on closet ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. It's been incredibly humid lately and I think the lack of airflow in there is making it worse. What's the safest and most effective way for me to clean this myself, or is this a job where I absolutely need to call the building management?

Black mold growth in a Dubai bedroom closet is a common issue due to the high humidity and lack of air circulation, especially with the AC not directly cooling that space. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can often address it yourself safely.

First, contain the area. Seal the closet off from the rest of the room with plastic sheeting if possible. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes without killing the roots. Scrub the area gently with a brush, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.

Crucially, you must fix the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from humidity or a minor leak. Use a moisture meter to check for dampness in the ceiling. Run a dehumidifier in the room and install a battery-operated humidity monitor to keep levels below 60%. Improve airflow by leaving the closet door ajar or installing a small vent.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odour, or returns after cleaning, it indicates a deeper issue. In such cases, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify hidden moisture and assess the extent. For tenants, notifying building management is necessary if the leak originates from the building envelope or AC system, as this is typically their responsibility to rectify.
