Safest way to clean black mold with kids present?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we came back from the summer holiday, and I’ve just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity from the AC might be making it worse. What’s the safest and fastest way to get this cleaned without putting my family at risk?

The safest approach is to have a professional handle it, especially with kids present. Black mold exposure can exacerbate respiratory issues like the coughing you described. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself with proper precautions, but given its location behind furniture and your children's symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised to determine the full extent.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, often due to condensation issues within the wall or from the AC unit itself. Before any cleaning, identify and fix the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

If you proceed with a limited DIY clean, everyone, especially the children, must vacate the room. Seal the area with plastic sheeting, wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Scrub the hard surface with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach does not prevent regrowth and can irritate the airways. Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using a dehumidifier.

For a situation of this nature, the most reliable course is a professional inspection. They can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count, which is critical for understanding the health risk and ensuring the remediation plan is complete. This scientific approach verifies the space is truly safe for your family to re-enter.
