Safest way to clean black mold with toddler?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has been having a really bad cough for the past two weeks, and I just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity is making it worse. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without risking my family’s health?

With a toddler and visible black mold, the safest approach is professional remediation. For small patches under 1 square meter, you can manage it cautiously. The main risk isn't the cleaning agent but the spores released during scrubbing.

First, isolate the area. Keep your toddler and family completely out of the room. Seal the door with plastic sheeting and tape. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Lightly mist the mold with water to suppress spores before wiping. Use a mixture of detergent and water or a dedicated mold cleaner—scrub gently to avoid aerosolizing the mold. Never use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and doesn't prevent regrowth in our high humidity.

After cleaning, the porous materials like drywall or the back of the wardrobe may need replacement if the mold has penetrated. In Dubai's climate, with constant AC use creating condensation and high ambient humidity, the root cause is often a hidden leak or poor ventilation. Simply cleaning the surface without fixing the moisture source means it will return.

Given the child's respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the mold species and the extent of the problem, which is often larger than what's visible. For health safety, especially with vulnerable individuals, verified containment and air scrubbing during removal are the standards.
