Safest way to clean mold behind kids' toy chest?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last two weeks and I’m getting really worried. I pulled out a toy chest from the corner of their bedroom to find a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I think the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest and fastest way to get this cleaned without putting my family at risk?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods when air conditioning can cause condensation on cooler exterior walls. The safest approach requires containment and proper removal to prevent spreading spores.

First, keep the children and anyone with respiratory issues out of the room. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Do not attempt to dry-scrub or vacuum the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores. Lightly mist the area with water from a spray bottle to dampen the mold and suppress spores, then carefully wipe it away with disposable cloths. A solution of diluted detergent or white vinegar is often effective for small surface areas. All materials used for cleaning, including the cloths, should be sealed in a plastic bag and disposed of immediately.

However, given the description ("huge patch") and the direct health impact on your children, professional assessment is strongly advised. The wall material is a critical factor; if the drywall or plaster is soft or crumbling, the mold has likely penetrated deeply and the material may need to be cut out and replaced. A professional inspection with moisture meters can determine the extent of the damage and the source of moisture, which is essential to prevent rapid regrowth. In Dubai's climate, the root cause is often a combination of interstitial condensation and lack of air circulation behind the furniture.

To prevent recurrence, leave a small gap between furniture and exterior walls to allow air flow, use a dehumidifier, and ensure your AC is serviced regularly to manage indoor humidity levels effectively. For definitive identification and to understand the specific risk, a lab culture can identify the mold species.
