Safest way to clean mold behind kids' wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom wardrobe. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

Black mould behind furniture is common in Dubai villas due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. For anything larger, or if the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess hidden spread and spore levels.

Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the room's door and open a window for ventilation. Mix one part unscented household bleach with four parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the mouldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Scrub with a stiff brush, then wipe clean with disposable cloths. Place all used cleaning materials in a sealed bag for disposal.

After cleaning, the surface must be dried completely. Use a fan or dehumidifier directed at the area for several hours. Mould will return if moisture remains. Identify the source – it's often condensation from the cold wall meeting humid air or a small, unnoticed leak. Moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall can improve airflow and prevent recurrence.

Since your children are already symptomatic, DIY cleaning may not fully address their exposure. Airborne spores are likely. A professional assessment with air and surface sampling can identify the mould species and concentration, which is critical information for their healthcare provider. In the UAE, companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the specific data needed to understand the health risk.
