Safest way to clean mold from kids' bedroom window?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black stuff growing around the window frames in their bedroom. It's been so humid lately that it's spread more than usual over the last few weeks. What's the safest way to clean this myself without exposing my family to more of it?

The black growth is likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. For your children's health, the safest approach is containment and proper cleaning.
First, keep the children out of the room during and for several hours after cleaning. Open the window to ventilate the area, but only if outdoor humidity is low, typically early morning. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Lightly spray the solution onto the mould to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then gently scrub with a microfiber cloth. Dispose of the cloth immediately in a sealed bag. The underlying issue is the condensation. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier in the room or a moisture absorber near the window. Wipe down the frames daily to remove any new condensation. For a lasting solution, ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as overworked units contribute significantly to indoor humidity. Given the symptoms and the spread, a professional inspection is advisable to assess the extent and type of mould. Some species require specific remediation protocols. Companies with an in-house microbiology lab can identify the species and provide a targeted remediation plan to ensure it is addressed safely and thoroughly. |
