Safest way to clean mold from kids' room curtains?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found black spots behind their bedroom curtains. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity from last month’s rain is causing mold. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without making their allergies worse?

First, move the kids to another room and keep the door closed to prevent spores from spreading. Do not attempt to clean the curtains in place.

For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) is effective and less irritating than bleach. Test it on a hidden corner of the fabric first. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses during cleaning.

Take the curtains outside to a well-ventilated area, like a balcony or garden. Gently vacuum both sides with a HEPA-filter vacuum to capture loose spores. Then, apply the vinegar solution with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, and scrub gently with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly with water and hang them to dry completely in the sun, if possible.

However, visible mold on a surface like curtains is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture source must be identified and fixed. In Dubai villas, this is frequently due to condensation from AC units, high indoor humidity, or residual dampness from rain seeping into walls. The mold behind the curtain suggests a condensation point on that wall or window.

Given that children are experiencing persistent respiratory symptoms, a DIY cleaning may not be sufficient. Disturbing the mold can aerosolize a high number of spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening their allergies. The safest approach is to have a professional inspection to assess the full extent of the growth within the wall cavity and to identify the precise moisture source. They can then perform containment-based remediation to ensure the problem is resolved safely. For health-related cases, a lab analysis to identify the mold species is also recommended to understand the potential risk.
