Safest way to clean mold with kids at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind their bedroom dresser. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai, and I’m worried the humidity from the AC is making it worse. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai's humid climate, especially in older buildings where AC condensation can create damp spots. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely, but you must take precautions because disturbing it sends spores into the air.
First, keep your children and anyone with asthma or allergies out of the room entirely during cleaning and for several hours after. Open windows to ventilate the area if possible. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Do not use a broom or dry brush, as this will aerosolize the spores. Lightly mist the patch with water to weigh down the spores, then scrub with a solution of detergent and warm water. A dedicated mold-cleaning product is more effective. Avoid bleach, as it can discolour surfaces but often doesn't kill the root structure in porous materials. After cleaning, place all wiping cloths and any removable moldy materials (like a piece of cardboard) into a sealed plastic bag for disposal. Wipe down the entire area with a damp cloth to capture any stray spores. Use a dehumidifier or run your AC continuously to keep the room's humidity below 60%, which is critical to preventing its return. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odour, or if the coughing persists after cleaning, this indicates a deeper issue. The visible patch is often just the surface manifestation of a problem inside the wall or AC system, common in our climate. In these cases, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is needed to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination, as DIY cleaning can be insufficient for health-sensitive situations. |
