Safest way to remove black bathroom mold with toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The grouting between the tiles in our master bathroom has started turning black, and I’m really worried because my toddler loves to play in there and touch everything. It’s an ensuite in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and the smell is getting stronger, especially when the bathroom is steamy. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this for good without using harsh chemicals around my child?

The black growth in your grout is likely Cladosporium or Aureobasidium, common moulds in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. While not the most toxic type, it can cause respiratory irritation and worsen allergies, which is a valid concern with a toddler.

For immediate, child-safe cleaning, create a paste of baking soda and water, scrub it into the grout with a stiff brush, then spray distilled white vinegar to react and disinfect. Rinse thoroughly. For persistent spots, a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (3%) sprayed on, left for 10 minutes, then scrubbed is effective and breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no harsh chemical residue.

Prevention is the only permanent solution. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and shower walls with a squeegee. In JVC's climate, consider a small deshumidifier for the ensuite if humidity persists. Ensure the AC is serviced regularly, as it controls the apartment's overall humidity level.

If the mould returns quickly after cleaning or the musty smell is strong, the growth may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection using a moisture meter can identify hidden dampness. For families with young children, a lab test of a swab sample can confirm the mould type and provide peace of mind, ensuring the cleaning method is appropriate for the species present.
