Safest way to remove black mold at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been growing there for a while, hidden from view. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it without putting my family at risk from the chemicals?

For a small patch (under one square foot) of surface mold you've found, you can handle it yourself safely. First, mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is effective against many common molds and is far less harsh than bleach or strong chemicals. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses before you start.
Spray the area thoroughly, let the vinegar solution sit for an hour to penetrate, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with damp cloths and ensure it is completely dry. Discard all cleaning materials afterwards. For porous materials like drywall or the back of the wardrobe that are heavily affected, removal and replacement is the only safe option, as the mold roots deeply into the material. Given the location behind a wardrobe and your children's symptoms, this is likely a symptom of a larger humidity issue. In Dubai's climate, this condensation is common on exterior walls, especially in older villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. Simply cleaning the visible patch may not address the root cause. For any mold issue linked to health symptoms or that covers more than a few square feet, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source—often a small leak or inadequate insulation causing condensation—and assess if the mold has spread into wall cavities. Remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and proper disposal. Always verify a company provides before-and-after lab testing to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe state. |
