Safest way to remove black mold immediately?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom dresser, which is against an exterior wall in our Mirdif villa. I think it might have started after the heavy dew we had last week. What’s the safest way to get rid of this immediately without exposing my family to more spores?

The safest immediate action is to isolate the area and avoid disturbing the mold, as this will release spores. Keep the bedroom door closed and the children out of the room. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself using a solution of detergent and water, not bleach. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during the process.

However, finding mold behind furniture against an exterior wall in Mirdif strongly suggests a condensation issue, which is common here due to the high humidity and temperature differential between our air-conditioned interiors and the hot exterior walls. Simply wiping the visible mold won't address the hidden moisture source. The wall cavity itself may be affected.

For a situation involving children with respiratory symptoms, the most effective and safe approach is professional remediation. They will set up containment barriers and use HEPA-filtered negative air machines to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house during removal. They can also identify and rectify the underlying condensation problem, which is often a thermal bridging issue in UAE villas. A certified inspector can provide a moisture map and a lab analysis of the mold type to guide the remediation process.
