Safest way to remove hidden black mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the holidays, and I finally pulled out the big toy chest in our spare bedroom in Jumeirah to find a patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it. It must have been there for months, hidden. What’s the safest way to get rid of this myself without risking my family’s health?

First, isolate the area immediately. Keep children and pets away and close the door to that room. Open a window for ventilation if possible. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself with extreme caution.

Wear an N95 respirator mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Do not touch the mold with bare hands. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle—this is often more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like drywall and works well on many common molds in our humid climate. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning.

Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, then wipe clean with disposable cloths. Place all used cleaning materials, including the brush and cloths, into a sealed plastic bag for disposal. After cleaning, use a hairdryer on a low setting to thoroughly dry the wall. This step is critical; any residual moisture in Dubai's air will cause it to regrow quickly.

However, since this was hidden behind furniture for months and is associated with health symptoms, the wall's internal structure may be compromised. Surface cleaning may not address mold growth inside the drywall or insulation. Persistent coughing suggests a significant spore load in the home's air.

For any mold issue larger than a small patch or that has been hidden for an extended period, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness and can take air samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is important for understanding health risks and verifying the cleanup was successful. In many villas in Jumeirah, the underlying cause is often condensation from AC ducts or a minor, unnoticed leak.
