Safest way to remove mold in my child's bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night for a couple of weeks now, and I just found black spots spreading behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is against an exterior wall in our villa in Jumeirah. I think the humidity from the last few weeks has caused it to get really bad. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold, especially since it's in my children's room?

The safest approach is to remove your children from the room and begin a multi-step process, as this involves both a health risk and a structural moisture issue. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with care. First, isolate the area by closing the door and opening a window if possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the mold off the wall with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space.

However, given the mold is behind furniture on an exterior wall, the root cause is almost certainly condensation or a hidden leak from the high humidity we experience, especially after recent weather. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning. The wall cavity itself may be contaminated.

For a child’s bedroom and a recurring problem, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall—this is the critical step. Remediation involves containing the area with plastic sheeting, using HEPA air scrubbers to filter spores from the air, and safely removing the affected building materials. The underlying cause, like insufficient insulation on the cold wall or a leak, must be fixed to prevent regrowth.

After remediation, a post-test verification by an independent lab is the only way to confirm the air quality is safe before your children return. This scientific, cause-and-solution approach is necessary for a permanent fix in Dubai's climate.
