Safest way to remove toddler's closet mold while pregnant?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago. I'm really worried because my son has been sneezing a lot more lately and I'm pregnant. What's the safest way to clean this ourselves without risking our health, or should we just call a professional company immediately?

For a small patch (under one square foot) discovered behind boxes, you can clean it yourself safely with precautions. The key is containing the spores. First, keep your toddler and yourself out of the room during the process. Open the window for ventilation and seal the room's air conditioning vent with plastic to prevent spores from circulating.

Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle—this is effective against many common household molds and is less harsh than bleach. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, then wipe it clean with disposable cloths. Place all used cleaning materials, including the gloves and mask, in a sealed plastic bag for disposal.

However, given your pregnancy and your toddler's existing symptoms, the safest course is a professional assessment. The visible patch could be part of a larger issue within the wall or under the flooring, especially in a Jumeirah villa where high humidity and constant AC use can cause hidden condensation. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden moisture sources and perform air or tape-lift sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding potential health risks. They can also ensure the cleanup is complete and the humidity source is addressed to prevent recurrence. For a thorough and health-conscious approach, getting a professional diagnosis is strongly recommended.
