Shoudl I hire a professional for mold in my Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold, as I've just found some black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because the recent humidity made it worse. I'm tempted to just scrub it off myself with bleach, but I'm worried it might be more widespread inside the walls. Should I hire a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai, or is this something I can safely handle on my own?

Visible mould is often just the surface issue. Given the recent humidity spike and your children's symptoms, the risk of hidden growth inside the wall cavity or under flooring is high. Dubai's climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for condensation and mould within wall assemblies.

Scrubbing surface spots with bleach is a temporary fix that addresses neither the root moisture problem nor any contamination inside the wall. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's coughing.

A professional inspection here is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to non-invasively map the extent of dampness hidden within the structure. This tells you if the problem is truly isolated or widespread. For health-related cases, the only way to identify the species and concentration is through air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab, which many local providers offer.

The Dubai Municipality has guidelines on indoor air quality and building maintenance that professionals follow. Verifying a company's certifications and their ability to provide a detailed lab report, not just a visual assessment, is key. This diagnostic approach gives you a clear picture of what you're dealing with before any remediation begins.
