Should damp basement cause mold and health issues?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the basement where we store most of our winter clothes. The walls seem damp even though the AC is on, and my son has been coughing up a storm lately—could this be mold? What should I do to check for mold and ensure it doesn’t harm us further?

Should damp basement cause mold and health issues? Yes, definitely. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, humidity levels can be quite high due to the climate. This provides a perfect environment for mold growth, especially if you have a damp basement that is not properly ventilated or has a poor drainage system.

Mold spores thrive in environments with moisture and lack of airflow. If your basement walls are feeling damp despite having an air conditioner on, it’s likely due to condensation or perhaps there's an issue with the AC setup. Condensation can occur when warm humid air meets cooler surfaces like concrete walls. It’s important to address this promptly to avoid mold growth.

Mold can indeed pose serious health risks. In Dubai, where we are exposed to a diverse climate and varying humidity levels from season to season, it's crucial to keep an eye on indoor air quality. Exposure to mold spores can lead to respiratory issues such as coughing, wheezing, asthma attacks, and even more severe conditions like fungal infections in immunocompromised individuals.

Given the symptoms your son is experiencing – persistent coughing – it might be wise to conduct a professional inspection of your home for mold. Our company provides comprehensive mold testing services that can detect not just visible mold but also airborne spores which are harder to spot.
