Should I be concerned about this mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain we had last month, I noticed a strange greenish-black growth forming on the walls near my kids' bedroom. It’s in the corner by the window where water tends to pool after storms. Should I be concerned about this being mold, and is it something I should address since I’m renting?

Absolutely, you should be concerned about the greenish-black growth you've noticed. In the UAE, particularly Dubai, mold can pose significant health risks and property damage concerns, especially if it thrives in damp environments like corners where water tends to pool after storms.

Mold spores can become airborne easily, leading to respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems for individuals with compromised immune systems or those sensitive to allergens. In addition to human health impacts, mold can also weaken building materials over time, compromising the structural integrity of your rental property.

The growth you've observed could very well be a type of mold known as Stachybotrys chartarum, which is particularly hazardous due to its potential to release mycotoxins. However, without professional inspection and testing, it's impossible to determine exactly what kind of mold this might be. Given the UAE's specific regulations and standards for mold remediation, I strongly recommend contacting a certified environmental specialist or hygienist.

In Dubai, you can reach out to Saniservice by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. They will provide a thorough inspection and recommend the appropriate remediation steps based on local guidelines such as those set forth in the UAE Ministry of Energy and Water's regulations for indoor air quality.

For DIY purposes, there are some actions you can take while waiting for professional help. Ensure proper ventilation by opening windows when it’s safe to do so, or use a dehumidifier if feasible. Avoid touching the mold directly as it could spread spores. If cleaning is necessary, wear protective gear like gloves and masks designed specifically for mold cleanup.

Remember, addressing mold issues in Dubai requires not just immediate action but also adherence to local health and safety standards. Professional assistance will ensure that any remediation efforts are effective and compliant with UAE regulations.
