Should I be worried about black mold in my bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where my bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s an interior wall without any windows and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be worried about my health sleeping in here?

The black spots in your bedroom corner are a definite concern, particularly given the persistent damp feeling you've described. In Dubai's climate, this is a very common issue caused by condensation. Your constantly running AC creates a significant temperature difference between the cool room and the warmer interior of the wall, leading to moisture accumulation in that corner—the perfect environment for mold.

Health effects vary by individual and mold type. For many, it causes allergy-like symptoms: sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, or worsened asthma. The risk is higher for children, the elderly, or those with existing respiratory conditions. Since you sleep in this room, your prolonged exposure means addressing it is important.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a specialist mold cleaner, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply wiping the visible growth often fails because the root cause—the moisture—remains. The dampness feeling suggests a potential issue within the wall cavity itself, which requires professional diagnosis.

The most effective long-term solution is to identify and rectify the moisture source. A professional inspection can determine if this is due to poor insulation, a hidden plumbing leak, or insufficient AC airflow causing condensation. They can also take samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which confirms the health risk and guides the proper remediation protocol. For a recurring problem in a damp room, this is the recommended course of action to resolve it for good.
