Should I call a pro for bedroom mold immediately?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha has had a persistent damp smell since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. I just pulled our king-sized bed away from the wall to change the sheets and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner, right behind the headboard. We’ve both been waking up with stuffy noses and I’m suddenly really worried about our health. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should call a professional for an assessment immediately. Given the symptoms you're both experiencing and the size of the infestation, this is a health concern that warrants prompt action. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and an enclosed space like behind a headboard creates a perfect environment for rapid mold growth.

For a patch of significant size, especially black mold, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to determine the extent and type. The visible growth is often just the surface of a larger problem that may extend into the wall cavity. A proper remediation process involves more than just wiping it away; it requires isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and identifying and correcting the source of moisture to prevent rapid regrowth.

In villas, this moisture source is often condensation from AC supply ducts running in the ceiling void or a minor, hidden plumbing leak. Since you're in a villa, you are responsible for the remediation process. Professionals with certifications, like IICRC, follow industry standards to ensure it's done correctly and safely, preventing cross-contamination to other areas of your home. They can also provide post-remediation verification to confirm the space is truly clean.

You can manage the immediate risk by keeping the bedroom door closed and the AC on to help control humidity until help arrives. Do not attempt to disturb the mold yourself by spraying bleach or scrubbing, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, significantly worsening your indoor air quality and potential health effects.
