Should I call a pro for black mold in shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I’ve just noticed black spots spreading in the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. It’s definitely gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. Given how common AC units are here and how fast things can spread, is this something I need to call a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I tackle it myself with a bleach spray?

It depends on the extent. Small, new surface mold on non-porous tile grout can often be managed with immediate action. For a few isolated spots, scrub with undiluted white vinegar or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface colour and can push roots deeper into porous materials, while the fumes are hazardous in a small, enclosed space.

However, the musty smell indicates a deeper issue, likely behind the tiles or in the wall cavity. JVC's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to thrive in hidden, damp spaces. If the black spots are widespread, recurring quickly after cleaning, or you notice any wall softening or paint bubbling, it's a sign of internal moisture. In this case, a professional inspection is advised to identify the source—often a tiny grout crack, a failed sealant, or even a small plumbing leak—and assess the full extent.

For rental apartments, Dubai Municipality guidelines hold property owners responsible for providing a habitable environment, which includes addressing underlying mold causes like leaks. A professional assessment provides documented evidence for landlords if remediation is needed. DIY attempts on a larger problem can inadvertently aerosolize spores and spread the issue. A proper inspection will use moisture meters and, if necessary, lab analysis to identify the species and the most effective containment and removal protocol.
