Should I call a pro for black mold now?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with the humidity lately, it seems to have appeared. My wife has started getting a bit of a stuffy nose in the mornings. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately this week, or can I try to clean it myself with vinegar over the weekend?

The black mold's sudden appearance and your wife's symptoms suggest this needs immediate attention, not a DIY approach. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can colonize rapidly behind items where condensation forms. The species matters greatly—some black molds, like Stachybotrys, produce mycotoxins that can cause more severe respiratory issues than common Cladosporium.

For a patch larger than one square foot, or any mold linked to health symptoms, professional assessment is the standard recommendation. A certified inspector can identify the species through lab analysis and use moisture meters to find the hidden water source, which is critical. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing the underlying moisture—often from a small AC condensate leak or external seepage through the building envelope—will result in its quick return.

Vinegar is ineffective on many porous materials and does not address root causes. Proper remediation involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, removing contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, and applying specialized antimicrobial treatments. Given the climate, ensuring your AC system isn't spreading spores throughout the home is also a key part of the process. For health safety and a permanent solution, a professional inspection this week is advisable.
