Should I call a pro for shower mold or clean it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse over the last few weeks, especially after the humidity spiked. Is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately, or can I handle it myself with a good cleaner this weekend?

Black mold in shower grout is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. For a small, surface-level patch (under 10 sq. ft), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, scrub thoroughly, and ensure the area is completely dry afterward with a fan or dehumidifier.

However, given your children's coughing and the fact it's spreading, this suggests a persistent moisture issue behind the tiles or in the wall cavity that cleaning won't fix. Surface cleaning often removes the visible stain but not the root cause, so it returns quickly. For recurring or spreading mold, especially with health symptoms present, a professional assessment is recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden dampness that needs addressing.

If you proceed with DIY, monitor your children's symptoms. If the coughing persists or worsens after you've cleaned, stop and call a pro. The cost for a professional inspection and assessment is typically far less than full remediation and provides a clear picture of whether the problem is just surface level or requires more extensive intervention.
