Should I call a pro for shower mold under tiles?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Park villa has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower to find a ton of black mold growing behind it. It seems to have spread a bit under the tiles. Given how humid it's been lately, is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately, or is it a weekend DIY job?

Since you found mold behind the sealant and suspect it has spread under the tiles, this requires a professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for mold to penetrate porous materials like grout and concrete screed.

A significant issue behind tiles suggests a persistent moisture problem, possibly from a leaking pipe or failed waterproofing membrane that a DIY clean cannot fix. Attempting to remove it yourself risks aerosolizing a large amount of spores and not addressing the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth.

For a situation like this in a villa, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and extent of contamination. Remediation often involves removing affected sealant, tiles, and potentially the wall substrate to properly dry and treat the area. The goal is to restore a dry environment to prevent recurrence, which is challenging to achieve with surface-level methods.
