Should I call management or mold removal for closet ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has these black splotchy patches that I just noticed when putting away winter clothes. We had that small leak from the upstairs neighbor's AC condensation pipe a couple of months ago, and I thought the maintenance guy had fixed it properly. Now the musty smell is really strong when you open the closet doors.
What's the best way to handle this—should I contact building management first, or just call a professional mold removal company directly to assess it?

Contact building management immediately. Since the leak originated from a neighboring unit, this is likely their responsibility to address. Document the damage with photos and send a formal request for inspection and repair. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold growth after any moisture event, so prompt action is crucial.
While you wait for management, keep the closet doors open to improve air circulation and consider using a dehumidifier in the bedroom to help reduce the musty smell. Do not attempt to scrub the mold yourself, as disturbing it can release spores and worsen air quality. If management is unresponsive or attempts a superficial fix like just painting over it, then engage a professional mold inspection company. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping and often air or surface sampling to identify the species and extent of the problem. In many cases, the drywall and insulation behind the ceiling will need to be removed to fully remediate the source of the mold, which is a job for certified technicians. The goal is to verify the moisture source is fixed and the environment is returned to a healthy state with post-remediation testing. |
