Should I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making my kids cough more than usual, and I just found patches of black and green mold all around the vent in our master bedroom. We’ve been running it non-stop since the weather got hotter last month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—your children coughing and visible mold growth around the AC vent—this is a serious indoor air quality issue that requires immediate and professional attention. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, air conditioning systems are prime locations for mold proliferation due to constant condensation. Attempting a DIY clean with bleach is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are hazardous to inhale, and it only addresses the surface discoloration, not the root cause or the potentially extensive contamination within the ductwork.

A professional inspection is crucial. Our certified technicians use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep within the AC system and air quality monitors to identify spore types and concentration levels. Certain molds, like some black molds, can produce mycotoxins that exacerbate respiratory issues, especially in children. Remediation is not just about cleaning; it involves containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and applying EPA-approved biocides designed for HVAC systems to eliminate the growth at its source. Furthermore, we identify and rectify the moisture source, which is often a clogged condensate drain line or inadequate insulation, to prevent recurrence.

For your family's health and to ensure the problem is resolved correctly, I strongly recommend contacting a professional environmental company.
