Should I clean bedroom AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet behind the headboard and now there's a large, dark black patch of mold there. We only noticed it yesterday when we moved the bed to rearrange the room. I'm worried about it spreading and my wife is already complaining of a stuffy nose. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is it bad enough that I need to call a professional mold removal company?

This requires professional assessment and remediation. Black mold from AC leakage, especially on porous materials like carpet, often indicates a deeper issue within the wall or underflooring that DIY methods cannot address. The high humidity in Dubai provides the perfect environment for rapid, unseen growth.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces; it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, and the moisture can cause it to return stronger. For a patch larger than one square meter, or if occupants are already experiencing symptoms like a stuffy nose, professional intervention is strongly advised to prevent health risks and structural damage.

A proper remediation process involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like the carpet and potentially affected drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and using EPA-approved antimicrobials—not bleach. Crucially, the source of the moisture, which is your AC unit's leak, must be repaired first; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.

Given the climate, a company with a microbiology lab can identify the species and verify the cleanup was successful with post-remediation testing, which is the only way to be sure the environment is safe.
