Should I clean bedroom mold myself or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity over the last few months. I'm worried because it's right where we sleep. How urgent is this to deal with, and should I call the landlord immediately or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

Stop the moisture source first, as the mold will return if the wall stays damp. In Dubai's humidity, this is often condensation from an exterior wall or a small, unnoticed leak.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given this is in your bedroom and your children are showing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the exact moisture cause and the mold type. Some species common in humid climates can cause more significant respiratory irritation.

Legally, your landlord is typically responsible for investigating and remediating the source of the moisture, such as a leak in the building envelope or faulty insulation. You should notify them immediately with clear photos. For your family's health, consider arranging your own assessment to confirm the extent. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and often air or tape-lift sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the spores present. This data is invaluable for ensuring the remediation is done correctly and can be shared with your landlord to expedite necessary structural repairs.
