Should I clean black mold in AC ducts myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor, and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in our master bedroom. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I'm handy with a spray bottle of bleach, but I'm worried it's inside the ductwork. Should I attempt to clean this myself or is it time to call a professional mold removal company?

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and will not address the mold inside your ductwork, which is the likely source of the odor. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive deep within the system, where DIY methods cannot reach.
For visible black mold around vents and a persistent damp smell, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The issue often extends far beyond what is visible. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, require proper containment and removal protocols to prevent cross-contamination. Professionals use HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments for the entire duct system, not just the visible spots. Given the humidity spike you mentioned, the condensation in your AC's evaporator coil or drip pan is the probable root cause. A full assessment will identify this moisture source to prevent immediate recurrence. While a thorough DIY cleaning might seem feasible, improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the problem throughout your apartment. For health safety and a permanent solution, a professional remediation company with the proper equipment and certifications is the necessary course of action. |
