Should I clean black mold myself or call a Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Al Barsha, and the room has felt really damp lately even with the AC running. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai straight away?

The dampness you describe is a classic Dubai issue, especially in villas where exterior walls can experience significant condensation from the constant AC use battling outdoor humidity. For a patch smaller than one square meter (about 3ft by 3ft), a careful DIY approach may be sufficient.

First, identify and address the moisture source. In Al Barsha, this is often condensation from the temperature differential or a small leak. Wipe the area dry before any cleaning. For the mold itself, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not simply spray bleach, as it can lighten the stain but often leaves the root structure intact. Instead, scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water. After scrubbing and drying, disinfect with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product.

However, given the location is a closet with stored fabrics, the spores may have spread to your clothing, requiring them to be professionally laundered. If the wall feels soft, the drywall is likely compromised and needs replacement. For any patch larger than one square meter, if the musty odor is strong, or if anyone in the household experiences respiratory irritation, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters to find the exact source and conduct air or swab tests to identify the mold species, which is the only way to confirm the actual risk level and ensure the remediation is complete.
