Should I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found in the corner of our master bedroom. It's behind the wardrobe on the wall, and it’s been spreading since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. I'm really worried about their health. Is it safe for me to clean this myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described—coughing in children—and the visible spread of black mold, this is a serious situation that warrants immediate professional attention. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, especially during summer months and in air-conditioned environments, mold growth behind furniture like wardrobes is common due to condensation and lack of air circulation. This creates an ideal breeding ground for toxic mold species, including Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), which is known to produce mycotoxins that can cause significant respiratory issues, particularly in children.

Attempting a DIY cleanup with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize these toxic spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially worsening health symptoms. Disturbing the colony without proper containment, HEPA filtration, and personal protective equipment is a significant health risk.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, large-scale or toxic mold infestations, especially those causing health effects, require assessment and remediation by licensed professionals. We must identify the exact species and the moisture source to ensure a permanent solution.

For the safety of your family, I highly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice uses advanced containment procedures, industrial-grade HEPA scrubbing, and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the hazard and prevent recurrence.
