Should I clean black mold myself or call Dubai management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the wall facing the outside. It's gotten worse since the heavy humidity last week and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I immediately call my building management in Dubai Marina to handle it?

For a patch smaller than a square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself, but the location and growth pattern suggest a deeper issue. The wall facing the outside in a closet is a classic spot for condensation buildup from the temperature differential between your AC-cooled room and the humid exterior. This moisture source must be addressed, or the mold will return.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move all clothing away. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent; avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. However, if the mold has penetrated the wall or is behind it, cleaning the surface is only a temporary fix.

Given you're in a Dubai Marina high-rise, your building management is typically responsible for the building envelope and structural integrity. The persistent humidity and condensation indicate a potential thermal bridging or insulation issue in the outer wall, which is their domain to investigate and repair. Contact them to report it; they will likely send their maintenance team to assess the cause. For verification of the mold type and to ensure it has been properly remediated after the leak is fixed, a professional inspection with lab testing can provide definitive answers.
