Should I clean black mold myself or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started smelling really damp, and I just pulled out my winter jackets to find patches of black mold on the back wall. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we had the AC off while we were on vacation last week. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I call my building's maintenance immediately for something like this?

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. The damp smell suggests a moisture issue, which is common in Dubai's climate where exterior walls can develop condensation from the constant AC use. First, identify and address the source of moisture; it's often a small leak or condensation buildup on that outside wall.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Do not mix bleach with other cleaners. Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated drywall or insulation, or if the musty smell persists after cleaning, you should call your building's maintenance. In many UAE buildings, the responsibility for structural moisture issues lies with the property management. They need to inspect the exterior wall and insulation for leaks or inadequate vapor barriers, which are frequent causes here. A professional inspection is recommended if the problem recurs, as this indicates a hidden moisture source. They can perform moisture mapping and air testing to identify the full extent of the issue, which is often beyond what's visible. |
