Should I clean black mold myself or hire a Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our son's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there for a while because my youngest has been having a runny nose and a weird cough for months that just won't go away. I'm really worried it's affecting his health. What's the best way to safely clean this myself, and should I get a professional company in Dubai to test the air quality afterwards?

A small patch of black mold, under 1 square foot, can often be handled safely yourself if the underlying moisture source is fixed. For anything larger, or if it's in your child's room with existing health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the species and spore levels throughout the room.

To clean it yourself, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Move everything out of the closet. Mix a solution of one part detergent with ten parts water, scrub the area, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) to disinfect. Allow it to dry completely. The critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC supply duct running through the closet or high humidity. In Dubai's climate, this is a constant battle.

Given your son's persistent respiratory symptoms, a DIY cleanup only addresses the visible colony, not the potential airborne spores that could be circulating from the hidden side of the wall. A professional inspection would use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the problem. An air quality test, analyzed by a microbiology lab, is the only way to confirm the mold type (e.g., whether it's the more problematic Stachybotrys) and verify that spore counts have returned to safe levels after remediation. For health concerns, this lab data provides peace of mind that the environment is truly safe.
