Should I clean black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s on the exterior wall, and with all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company in Dubai?

For a small patch (less than one square foot) on a non-porous surface like tile, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Use a detergent solution, not just bleach, as bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots on porous materials like drywall or plaster.

In your case, since it's on an exterior wall behind a wardrobe and actively spreading, this indicates a persistent moisture issue. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with potential condensation from your AC system on that cold exterior wall, is feeding it. This requires professional assessment. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to find the source of the water intrusion, which must be fixed first. They can also identify the mold species to confirm if it's the notorious Stachybotrys (true "toxic black mold") or a less hazardous type, though any mold should be treated seriously.

For remediation of this scale, DIY methods often fail and can aerosolize spores. Professional remediation in Dubai follows IICRC standards for containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. After fixing the moisture source and removing the mold, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly clean.
