Should I clean black mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the AC condensation drips down that wall and we never move the heavy furniture. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is it serious enough that I need to call one of those mold remediation companies?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai, I strongly advise against attempting to clean the black mold yourself with supermarket bleach. The situation you've described—persistent cough in children, a hidden growth behind furniture, and a direct link to AC condensation—is a serious indoor air quality concern that warrants professional intervention.

Bleach is a superficial solution. It may remove the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces but it does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall or wood. More critically, it does not address the microscopic spores released during cleaning, which can be aerosolized and spread throughout your home, potentially exacerbating respiratory issues. The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create a perfect environment for mold to quickly regrow if the underlying moisture issue is not professionally resolved.

In the UAE, proper remediation involves a multi-step process: first, a certified inspection (including air and surface sampling) to identify the species and spore count; second, engineering controls like negative air pressure containment to prevent cross-contamination; and third, using EPA-approved, specialized biocides and HEPA filtration to remove the infestation at its source. The AC drip line, a very common issue here, must be repaired to prevent recurrence.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of hidden growth you suggest, a DIY approach is a significant health risk. I recommend you contact a professional company like Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Their certified team can properly assess the situation, ensure it is handled safely according to local standards, and protect your family's health.
