Should I clean moldy AC unit myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in my son's bedroom has started giving off a really damp, moldy smell every time it kicks on. I’m worried because he’s had a bit of a wheezy cough for the last couple of weeks and I can see a few black spots around the edges of the vent. What’s the best way to safely clean the AC unit myself to stop the mold from spreading, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

Based on what you've described, that's a classic sign of microbial growth within the AC system, and it's definitely a concern, especially with your son's respiratory symptoms. In Dubai's climate, AC units are prime real estate for mold due to the constant condensation mixing with dust.

For a minor issue, you could try a careful surface clean. Turn the AC's power OFF at the circuit breaker. Remove the vent cover and wash it with a solution of warm water and a few drops of antimicrobial dish soap. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe the accessible parts of the evaporator coils and the drain pan. DO NOT use bleach, as it can corrode components and the fumes are hazardous when circulated.

However, seeing black spots and smelling the odor when it runs strongly suggests the contamination is deep inside the ductwork or on the evaporator coil itself, which is not a DIY job. Improper cleaning can actually aerosolize the spores and spread them throughout the room, exacerbating the health risk.

Given your son's wheezy cough, I'd strongly recommend you call a professional immediately. We use specialized HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial fogging, and coil cleaning techniques that are compliant with Dubai Municipality's health and environmental standards. This isn't just about cleaning; it's about proper remediation to ensure the air your family breathes is safe.

For a proper inspection and safe remediation, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can assess the situation and get that unit cleaned properly.
