Should I clean nursery mold myself with kids at home?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and infant have both been having a runny nose and cough for the last couple of weeks, and I've just discovered what looks like black mold along the bottom of the wall behind their dresser in our nursery. The room is on the side of our villa that doesn't get much sun, and with the AC running constantly, I'm worried it's gotten too damp. What's the best way to handle this safely with the kids in the house, and should I call a professional or is it something I can clean myself first?

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with infants and toddlers present. The primary risk is that cleaning disturbs the mold, releasing spores and mycotoxins into the air that your children will inhale, potentially worsening their respiratory symptoms.

The combination of a perpetually shaded room and constant AC use in Dubai's climate creates a perfect environment for mold due to condensation and high humidity. This situation requires a professional assessment. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe in the wall, rising damp, or condensation from the AC unit itself—which must be fixed first, or the mold will return immediately.

For a confirmed small patch, a professional remediation team will use containment barriers and HEPA air scrubbers to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of your home during removal. They will also advise on the safest time for your family to return to the nursery. Given the health symptoms and the villa's construction, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to ensure the problem is resolved at its source.
