Should I clean small black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been especially humid the last few weeks and I think it might be spreading. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company for this?

That small cluster of black spots appearing during a humid spell is a classic sign of mold growth in Dubai, almost certainly triggered by condensation. For an area smaller than one square foot, you can attempt to clean it yourself. The most effective DIY method is to scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, or a mix of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid exposure.
However, DIY cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem causing it. In a closet, the source is often condensation from an adjacent external wall or a cold pipe, exacerbated by lack of air circulation. After cleaning, you must identify and fix the moisture source, then run a dehumidifier or ensure your AC is operating correctly to keep humidity levels below 60% to prevent it from returning rapidly. If the mold returns after cleaning, if the affected area is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty odor, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden moisture sources that are not visible. For accurate identification, a lab test can confirm the mold type, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation strategy, especially in households with allergy sufferers or infants. In many villa communities, remediation work must also comply with Dubai Municipality public health guidelines for proper disposal. |
