Should I clean sofa wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in our Jumeirah Park villa has started to feel damp and has these weird black speckles. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can just clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company to check it out properly?

Damp walls with black speckles in a Dubai villa, especially after a spike in humidity, are a classic sign of a mold issue. The high ambient humidity combined with year-round AC use creates significant temperature differentials within walls, leading to condensation and perfect conditions for mold growth. Bleach is not recommended; it’s mostly water, which can feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space.
For a small area (under one square foot), a thorough cleaning with a dedicated mold remover and fixing the moisture source may suffice. However, a damp patch behind a large piece of furniture like a sofa often indicates a more serious, hidden problem within the wall cavity. The moisture could be from a small plumbing leak, compromised waterproofing, or severe condensation. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source behind the wall, which is critical for a permanent fix. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol, especially if it’s a more problematic type like Aspergillus. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing the hidden moisture and root cause will result in it returning quickly. The Dubai climate guarantees that. |
