Should I clean this mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains last month, I noticed a musty smell in the basement of our apartment. When I went down there today, I saw some greenish spots on the walls near the floor where water tends to collect. I’m not sure if this is just mildew or something more serious like mold, and if it’s safe for me to try cleaning it myself or if I should call in a professional. Can anyone advise?

Absolutely, the scenario you've described is one that many residents of Dubai and the UAE may encounter during or after heavy rainfalls. The presence of greenish spots on walls is a strong indicator of mold growth, particularly given the moisture conditions you describe.

Firstly, it's crucial to understand that while mildew can be addressed with some basic cleaning products, mold requires more stringent treatment due to its potential health implications and persistence. Mold spores can trigger allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and other health concerns, especially for individuals with asthma or existing allergies.

Before proceeding with any cleaning, it’s advisable to conduct a professional inspection. In the UAE, regulations mandate that any remediation efforts are carried out by qualified professionals who adhere to local guidelines such as those set forth by the Dubai Municipality (DM) and the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC). These authorities enforce stringent standards for mold removal and hygienization to ensure public health and safety.

If you decide to take initial steps, here's a brief guide:

1. Preparation: Wear protective gear such as gloves, masks, and goggles before handling any cleaning materials or affected areas.
2. Testing: Use a simple home test kit to confirm the presence of mold if possible. This can give you an idea about whether it is indeed mold or mildew.
3. Cleaning: For minor cases, a solution of water and bleach (1:9 ratio) might be effective. Apply this mixture with a sponge or cloth, allowing it to sit for 5-10 minutes before wiping dry. Ensure good ventilation during cleaning to prevent inhalation of spores.
4. Drying: Mold thrives in damp environments, so ensure thorough drying after cleaning. Use dehumidifiers if necessary to maintain relative humidity levels below 60%.
5. Prevention: Address the source of moisture by repairing leaks or improving drainage systems around your home. Regularly inspect and maintain plumbing fixtures.

However, given the complexity involved in identifying different types of mold and ensuring thorough removal without spreading spores, it's highly recommended to seek professional assistance. The service hotline 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com can provide immediate guidance and scheduling for expert mold remediation.

Remember, the long-term health of your family and the structural integrity of your home are paramount. Engaging a professional from the start ensures compliance with local regulations and maximizes the effectiveness of the cleanup process.
