Should I clean wardrobe mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has developed these black fuzzy patches, and I'm sure it's from the humidity. It started becoming noticeable about two weeks ago and seems to be getting worse. I'm worried about it spreading to my clothes and causing health issues. Should I attempt to clean this myself with vinegar or bleach, or is it time to just call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black fuzzy patches on an outside-wall wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mould, extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant temperature contrast between air-conditioned interiors and the hot exterior walls. The wall acts as a cold surface where moisture condenses, providing the damp environment mould needs to grow.
For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), you can attempt cleaning yourself. A vinegar solution is often more effective than bleach for porous surfaces like wood, as it can kill the mould deeper within the material whereas bleach only removes the surface discolouration. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the area is well-ventilated. Thoroughly dry the area afterwards with a fan to prevent immediate regrowth. However, if the mould has penetrated the wood, is on the wall behind the wardrobe, or covers a larger area, a professional assessment is strongly advised. The root cause is the condensation issue, which will persist without addressing the humidity and temperature differential. DIY cleaning in such cases is often a temporary fix, and the mould will return. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of dampness and will recommend solutions, which may include improving insulation, adjusting AC settings, or installing a dehumidifier. For health safety and to prevent it from spreading to your belongings, a lab test can also identify the mould species, which informs the correct remediation protocol. |
